A Day in Naivasha: My Top Nature & Adventure Picks for a Perfect Day Trip
If there’s one place in Kenya that always feels like home to me — wild, free, and breathtakingly alive — it’s Naivasha.
Whether you’re a fellow adventurer, a nature lover, or just someone in need of a quick city escape, Naivasha is your ideal day trip destination. It’s where I live, work, and reconnect with nature daily — and in this post, I’ll share my favourite day trip activities that bring out both the thrill and the peace of this incredible place.
Let’s dive in!
1. Morning Boat Ride on Lake Naivasha
Start your day with a tranquil boat ride across Lake Naivasha. It’s not just about the ride — it’s the hippos grunting nearby, the sight of a fish eagle swooping down for a catch, and the cool morning mist rising off the water. Pure magic.
2. Bike Safari in Hell’s Gate National Park
There’s no safari experience quite like cycling past giraffes, warthogs, and zebras — with towering cliffs and volcanic rock formations surrounding you. Hell’s Gate lets you be part of the wild, not just a spectator.
Insider tip: Carry water, sunblock, and your spirit of adventure!
3. Hike Mt. Longonot for Epic Views
Feeling adventurous? Mt. Longonot’s crater rim hike gives you a 360° view of the Rift Valley that’s worth every drop of sweat. It’s a 3-4 hour climb with incredible birdlife, and sometimes even buffalo sightings on the rim.
4. Crescent Island Walk – No Fences, Just Wildlife
This is where I take friends who want a peaceful, up-close wildlife experience. Walk alongside zebras, impalas, and giraffes in an open sanctuary surrounded by lake views.
Bonus: Arrive by boat for an unforgettable combo.
5. Birdwatching at Crater Lake Game Sanctuary
As a conservationist, this place is one of my favorite peaceful escapes. With over 150 bird species, scenic forest trails, and even colobus monkeys, it’s ideal for birders and photographers.
6. Visit the Naivasha Raptor Centre
This one's close to my heart. Learn about Kenya’s birds of prey and the role they play in our ecosystem. You’ll meet rescued owls, eagles, and vultures — and see the power of education and conservation firsthand.
7. Kayaking on Lake Oloiden
Want peace and flamingos? Lake Oloiden is quieter than Naivasha and perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding, especially during sunset. You’ll often spot pelicans too!
8. Wine Tasting at a Rift Valley Vineyard
Yes, Naivasha has wine too! Take a detour to a local vineyard within the Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary for wine tasting, game viewing, and lazy lunches under the sun.
9. Rock Climbing at Fischer’s Tower
If you’ve got a bit of adrenaline in your veins, try climbing the famous Fischer’s Tower in Hell’s Gate. Even if you don’t climb, the view and photos here are unreal.
10. Explore Eburru Forest
Eburru is the lesser-known gem of Naivasha. I come here when I need to breathe, slow down, and be surrounded by indigenous trees and birdsong. Perfect for mindful hiking or forest bathing.
11. Photography & Wildlife Walk at Sanctuary Farm
Love slow safaris? This is for you. Think grazing herds, wildflowers, and golden-hour light. Great for kids, couples, or anyone who just wants to soak it all in without a rush.
12. Naivasha Curio Market
Before heading back, stop by the local market for handcrafted beadwork, wood carvings, and beautiful Maasai shukas. A great way to support local artisans and take a piece of Naivasha home.
13. End the Day with a Bonfire by the Lake
Wrap it up the Naivasha way — with a lakeside bonfire, good food, and laughter under the stars. Camp Carnelley’s and Fisherman’s Camp are my top picks.
Final Word from Me
Naivasha is more than a stopover — it’s a living, breathing story of wildlife, community, and adventure. Whether you came for the thrill, the view, or the peace, Naivasha will give you a reason to come back.
If you’re ever around and want a guided experience, a conservation talk, or just some local company, feel free to get in touch — I’d be happy to show you around.
